The River Edge
[49.064020N, 122.850078W]
Photography Installation with AR 3D scene with sound. 3D scanning, video, and sound. 48"x68"x12"
Located in the unceded traditional lands of the Tsawwassen, Katzie, Kwantlen, and Semiahmoo First Nations.
The installation The River Edge invites viewers to virtually explore the Nicomekl River shore in Surrey, BC . This is a location along the river where people experience a natural environment that is nevertheless shaped by human activity in a variety of ways. The scene captures the location at a moment where the sketchpad and drawing tools suggest a place of contemplation, but other activity can be seen through the virtual iPad in the scene - a glimpse of the river and the shore on the other side where kayakers go by as the train, an ubiquitous sight of industry in this area, passes by in the distance.

I WAS HERE AR
Using augmented reality technology, Paulo Majano's Installation and App I Was Here AR captures moments of everyday life set against the backdrop of local public outdoor spaces and parks across Surrey and its surrounding region. Each location is captured both as a photograph and as a 3D scan (created by scanning individual elements on location in three dimensions). Each photograph contains within it a latent image - a three-dimensional photographic recreation that, when revealed, like the latent thought in Freud's theory of dreams, offers potentially different narratives and new layers of meaning.
When each photo is viewed with a smartphone or tablet using the AR App, the 3D scene becomes visible. The photographic image, at times revealing only partial subjects, or showing elements perhaps a little close to the edges, is an invitation for the viewer to interact with the scene and reframe the composition from a different point of view. Through this virtual view, viewers can move in for a closer look, or look behind objects to reveal elements not initially visible in the photo.
Through AR, I invite you the viewer to visit the location and become the photographer for a while, exploring, choose what details to view, and actively immerse yourself in the experience of this environment.
Scan the photographs: “The Carved Tree” or “The River Edge” with the App and interact with the scenes in Augmented Reality.

About Augmented Reality (AR):
Augmented Reality is a technology that allows the overlay of digital content such as 3D graphics, images, sound, or video, over views of the world in real time. I use AR for mobile devices to see 3D content or video with smartphones or tablets running the Augmented Reality App
