seductiveGROTESQUE AR - project preview
seductive Grotesque AR is an exhibition of virtual sculptures , a preview exhibition of the work in progress will be presented at Arbutus Gallery, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Surrey, British Columbia Jul 25-Aug 9. Although these statues do not exist as physical objects, in this exhibition viewers will be able to walk around them, study their details up close, or view them from afar, as one would view any sculpture. In Seductive Grotesque AR, I use Augmented Reality (the overlay of digital imagery over views of the world in real-time) to give the viewer a physical experience of objects that normally exist in a non-physical realm. Pointing a smartphone's camera to one of the framed image triggers the appearance of the sculpture as a 3D virtual object - the sculpture can then be viewed from all angles and experienced in the real space of the gallery, like a physical sculpture. But, what is this apparition that presumes to inhabit the world of objects? Is a new kind of authenticity at play when, to fully experience the virtual sculpture viewers must move around it and simultaneously interact with both digital form and physical space? In this exhibition I continue the line of inquiry started in my 2009 exhibition "The Valley" in which I attempted to give viewers a sense of the uncanny through videos of photo realistic avatars mimicking the basic human function of "breathing". In Seductive Grotesque AR, augmented reality creates a space where the physical and the virtual coexist. |
